Mathematics and Smartness… Where Do We Go From Here?

In this talk, I will provide some context for my experiences as a Black man and the literature that led me to study mathematics and smartness, including the intersections of intelligence, mathematics, race, and gender, and how that has shaped what it means to be smart and who is smart in mathematics. I will briefly share three papers I am working on, each centered on three different ideas: 1) Black learners’ conceptions of smartness, 2) Teachers' implicit and explicit communication of smartness, and 3) Black learners’ performance of smartness through participation.
