“Mobilizing the Cytoskeleton to Combat Microbial Infections”
The immune system is dependent on the actin cytoskeleton to eliminate microbes during infection. The Urbano Laboratory has identified immune signals that reshape the expression of actin-binding proteins in a variety of host cells, including macrophages—key defenders against infection. Using RNA-seq analysis, CRISPR-based gene-knockouts, and advanced imaging approaches, Dr. Urbano is uncovering how immune cells are directed to sites of infection, and how certain specialized pathogens can exploit these pathways for dissemination in tissues. Revealing these connections between the cytoskeleton and host immunity may unlock new therapeutic strategies in the era of antimicrobial resistance.
