⭐️ Presented by the Campus Community Book Project
In this talk, Sasha Abramsky, Continuing Lecturer, UC Davis Writing Center, will explore: What are immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees facing in the US at the moment? How does the society get immiserated and impoverished when we marshall the full force of the state to wage war on immigrants and immigrant culture/community? How does our understanding, and the world's understanding of America and the American story, change as we become a lock-down nation? And what are the ways out of this morass?
In 2025-2026, the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project will focus on the theme of belonging and will feature Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora. Solito narrates the author’s 3,000-mile journey at the age of nine from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border to reunite with his parents. What was anticipated to take two weeks expands into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.
