Statement from the Avanza Initiative on Upcoming K-16 Student Conference

In May 2026, the Avanza Initiative is preparing to host its annual conference, which supports K–16 students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in higher education. Our mission is to serve our communities by encouraging students to pursue a college degree. In the past, this event has been known as the César Chávez Leadership Conference.

The Avanza Initiative is deeply saddened by the recent reports of sexual abuse of adults and minors involving César Chávez. Our hearts are with the victims, their families and all those who have found inspiration in his leadership for justice and equity for farmworker rights and are now grappling with this news.

We unequivocally condemn all acts of abuse and violence. At the same time, we remain firmly committed to advancing equitable access to higher education for all members of our community. In alignment with these values, the Avanza Initiative will move forward with this year’s event under a new name: the Avanza Rising Scholars Conference.

We appreciate your continued support of this conference and of our shared efforts to expand access and opportunity.
