UC Davis Honors Luis G. Carvajal-Carmona with Chancellor’s Award for International Engagement

UC Davis faculty and scholars are advancing global research and training that address critical health challenges, with a focus on equity and community impact. At the 11th annual International Connections Reception, the university recognized leaders whose work extends across borders—including Luis G. Carvajal-Carmona, whose collaborative research and mentorship are transforming cancer prevention and precision medicine in Latin America.

Carvajal-Carmona, professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine in the School of Medicine and associate vice chancellor for Advancing Mentoring and the Professoriate in Inclusive Excellence, leads the UC Davis Multi-Disciplinary Cancer Research Training Program to Advance Precision Cancer Prevention and Care in Latin America. In partnership with colleagues such as Laura Fejerman, he has strengthened institutional research capacity, supported more than 50 projects, and helped establish doctoral programs and sustainable research infrastructure across the region.

Through initiatives like Latinos United for Cancer Health Advancement (LUCHA) and his mentorship of trainees from historically underrepresented backgrounds, Carvajal-Carmona has contributed directly to patient care and public health, including Colombia’s national hereditary cancer program, promoting early detection, prevention, and equitable access to care.

The reception also honored Sarah Meredith for her leadership supporting international students and faculty abroad, as well as faculty recipients of the Excellence in Teaching for Global Learning Award, Ozcan Gulacar and Marc Ishisaka-Nolfi, whose work prepares students to engage meaningfully with global challenges through experiential and culturally informed learning.

Carvajal-Carmona’s achievements, alongside those of the other awardees, exemplify UC Davis’ commitment to international engagement, inclusive excellence, and collaborative solutions that benefit communities locally and globally.
