AvenueM Provides Pathways from Community College to Medical School

Community college students from across Northern California spent two weeks at the UC Davis School of Medicine this summer practicing clinical skills, connecting with physicians and medical students, and gaining a firsthand look at careers in medicine through AvenueM. From learning suturing and CPR to exploring trauma care and physical exams, the immersive experience helped students build the knowledge, confidence and relationships needed to pursue medical school.

For many participants, the program transformed medicine from a distant aspiration into an achievable goal. Alongside hands-on training, scholars gained insight into the medical school admissions process, research opportunities and the support systems available to help them succeed, while preparing to one day return to serve rural and medically underserved communities across Northern California.

The experience reflects the broader goals of the Northern California K-16 Regional Education Collaboratives to strengthen workforce pathways through regional partnerships and expanded access to educational opportunities. By investing in students early and supporting them along the path to high-demand careers, UC Davis and its partners are helping build a stronger healthcare workforce for Northern California.
