Join the Jewish Culture, Heritage, and Identity Faculty and Staff Association (JCHAIFSA) for a Tu BiShvat gathering celebrating the Jewish New Year of Trees, a holiday that centers environmental awareness, agricultural tradition, and renewal. Tu BiShvat is one of four “new years” in the Jewish calendar and marks the beginning of the agricultural year for fruit-bearing trees, with deep roots in Jewish law, custom, and ecological ethics.
This event will introduce the history and meaning of Tu BiShvat, including its connection to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Participants will have the opportunity to sample fruits traditionally associated with the holiday, including selections from the Seven Species for which the Land of Israel is praised, and may also enjoy kosher wine as part of the celebration.
The program will feature a talk by Dr. Yael Teff-Seker (UC Davis Sociology), who will explore how Jewish tradition engages questions of sustainability and environmental responsibility in Israel, connecting ancient practices with contemporary ecological concerns.
This event is open to all and will be held in person, with a Zoom option available upon request.
